Flower Power Valance Tutorial

Flower Power Valance

I have been asked a lot
for this pattern
so I have decided
to write out
the directions for you
on how I made it

This is only the second
crochet pattern I have
written so let me know
if there is something that
I need to write a little better

You can find the
half flower tutorial here
Have a look at it if you
are unsure on how to do
any of this full flower
There are lots of pictures
that may help you
You will also need
this tutorial to make
the half flowers
for the valance

Flower Power Valance

Crochet hook US size H

I used Sugar & Cream and Peaches & Creme yarn in various colors in addition to other various brand cotton yarns that I had.  Unfortunately I cant tell you how much yarn I used because I already had a lot of different colors in my stash.

DC = Double Crochet
CH = Chain
ST = Stitch
SL ST = Slip Stitch

Magic Ring = If you are not sure how to do this Google How to Crochet a Magic Ring

Join as you go = If you are not sure how to do this Google Join as you go Crochet Method

There are lots of tutorials on the internet for these methods

Full flower

Row 1:  Make a magic loop.  CH 3 (counts as first DC) 11 DC in magic loop.  Join with SL ST to 3rd CH of beginning CH 3. 12 stitches.
Fasten off if you are changing colors.

Row 2:  Join the next color in any DC.  Ch4 (counts as your first DC & CH 1).  DC CH 1 around in each ST.  Join with SL ST in the 3rd ch of the beginning CH 4 to close round.  Do not fasten off.  12 DC with a ch 1 space in between.

Row 3:  SL ST into the first CH 1 space.  CH 3, 2 DC in the same CH 1 space.   3 DC in each CH 1 space around.  SL ST to the 3rd CH of the beginning CH 3 to close round.  Fasten off if you are changing colors.  36 DC (3 in each space).

Row 4:  Join next color in any DC.  CH 3 DC in same stitch CH 4, *skip over one DC, 2 DC in next ST, 2DC in next ST chain 4*. Repeat from * to * around until last 2 ST, SK 1 ST, 2DC in last ST.  Join with SL ST to 3rd CH of beginning CH 3.  Your ending join will be between the 2 sets of DC.  12 CH 4 spaces. Do not fasten off.

Row 5:  Make 8 DC in chain 4 SP.  Skip 2 DC, SL ST in between the 2 sets of DC.  SK 2DC, 8 DC in next CH 4 SP.  Repeat around.  To end round SL ST in beginning ST and fasten off.

I used the join as you go method when making this curtain.  The join was in made in between  stitch  4 and 5 of the 8 DC on the last row.  See the picture on where to join each flower.

Assemble as follows

Row 1:  8 full flowers

Row 2:  Half flower, 7 full flowers, half flower.

Note: I added the full 7 flowers first, then went back and added the half flower on each end with the join as you go method into the space.   See the picture for where to start your first full flower on the 2nd row.  It will not be directly under the 1st flower.  You will be joining the flowers on the bottom of the 1st row and on the sides of the 2nd row as you go.

Row 3:  2 full flowers on each side

Row 4:  1 half flower and 1 full flower on each side.  See row 2 for the order in which they were added.

Row 5:  1 Full flower on each side.

 So there you go!
If you want to make your valance
bigger or smaller
just add or take away
flowers
I would love to see
your
Flower Power Valance!

  17. Wow is all I can say, and a gasp. I had been looking for a crochet curtain pattern for the past few months. I was following bobwilson123 on FB and someone posted for a crochet curtain pattern and someone posted a link leading to you. My search is no over, I can create a kitchen curtain for me and my little daughters room. THANK YOU for sharing and having so much talent to create this. My only question is.. What is the width of the window your displaying it on in the photo? Mine is 27 or 32 across, im sure it wont be hard to adjust the pattern if it needs to be larger.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can just do as many flowers as you need to cover your window. Mine is covering a space that is about 42". Hops this helps.

  27. Hi Robin!!

Working on a runner for my kitchen table in your pattern!! I love it!! Quick question for you tho, did you just slip stitch to its neighbor between the 8 dc? So 4 dc, sl st then 4 more dc? Have never done a project that required join as you go, so just trying to grasp the concept!! :)

    Thanks for any help!!
    Karolin

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes thats how I made mine.
      Good luck on your runner!!

      Robin

      Delete
    2. To join the flower motifs together you could make a ch 1, then sl st in the next flower, ch 1 and then make the 4 dc on the current flower you're working on. This would make the curtain a little bit wider and a little bit longer, but might be a good idea if your window is slightly wider/longer than Robin's window of 42".

    ReplyDelete

    1. Sorry but I don have the wrappers on the yarn so I cant tell you the colors or how many I used. You might be able to tell by looking at the picture. I used shades of purple, green, aqua and orange in cotton yarn.

  38. Does the type of yarn matter I made a flower using red heart and mine came out smaller then it should have if I'm using red heart yarn should I try a bigger hook to get the size flower as yours in the picture. What do your flowers measure?? I love these

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Cindy I think the cotton yarn is thicker and probably will make a bigger flower. Yes you can use a bigger hook but it may make the flower to loose and floppy when it hangs. The cotton yarn is stiffer. I would just go with the smaller flowers. I really don't think the size will matter much since its not a wearable item although you may need to make more. My flowers are around 7" but the valance has been hanging for a long time so Im sure it has stretched. Hope this helps you.

  39. Has anyone figured out the amount of yarn needed?

    1. You would start with the magic loop, ch 3, 6 dc in loop, turn your work, ch 1 and FO if you're changing colors; otherwise, ch 3 or make the beg dc, and proceed as the patt, but turning each row. So you'll end up with six petals. You can look at the picture to help figure this out. Hope this helps.

Your work is awesome. Could you possibly do a video tutorial? Those are much easier to follow; the written instructions are confusing. Thanks.

  74. My concern is gravity, does this stretch over time?

    ReplyDelete

  119. Can you tell me how many different colors you used? I think I see 2 different oranges. I have 4 colors now, and need to add a few more, but don't want too many. :)

  122. I have added up how much yarn will be needed to complete this pattern using 23 full flowers and 4 half flowers. I crochet tightly but I have been generous in my calculations to accommodate those who crochet more loosely. Besides, no one ever minded having a bit of extra yarn to play with at a later date!
Total yarn in yards = 795
For those who want to do different colors in each row, I have broken those down as well:
    Row 1 = 1.7 yards x 23 flowers = 39 yards
    Half Flower = 1 yard x 4 halves = 4 yards
    Row 2 = 2 yards x 23 flowers = 46 yards
    Half Flower = 1 yard x 4 halves = 4 yards
    Row 3 = 5 yards x 23 flowers = 115 yards
    Half Flower = 2.5 yards x 4 halves = 10 yards
    Row 4 = 8.5 yards x 23 flowers = 195.5 yards
    Half Flower = 4.5 yards x 4 halves = 18 yards
    Row 5 = 14.5 yards x 23 flowers = 333.5 yards
    Half Flower = 7.5 yards x 4 halves = 30 yards

  128. This is so gorgeous! A friend of mine contacted me today to make this for her. I have no cotton yarn on hand but I wanted to at least try a flower so I used 100% acrylic (I love this yarn). How do you think it would hold up? Do you think there would be too much stretch to it? Also, when using the cotton, have you had any issues with it shrinking or running when washed? Thanks!!!

  134. Hi Robin,
This is my first time writing to you. Thank you so much for posting this wonderful pattern. I have made one flower in a varigated color cotton yarn. The colors change from maroon, to beige, to tan, to pink. I thought this would be good because one of the walls in our living room is maroon and the Bali material shades are also maroon. I would appreciate your thoughts on this. I know the flowers show up much better with changing the yarn colors but thought it would work good too. I intent to also do this pattern in my kitchen using bright colors to really accent the room. Thank you in advance for all the time you spend to help.

  142. I really love this project. However, I too have had trouble joining flowers. Can you talk the video lady into showing how to to thus. I did a lot of flowers and now am having to tear out last row in order to join them as I went. Ugh. Thanks again!

  143. Is there a tutorial for putting the valance together? LIke what stitch to use? Or is it just at the discretion of the crocheter?

    1. Sorry there is no tutorial for putting this together. Its the "join as you go" method. There are lots of tutorials if you Google that. My flowers are joined in the center of the petal. Look at the picture for placement.
